Shareware registrations for Default Folder are handled by Kagi, a small company run by Kee Nethery that processes registrations for a number of shareware authors. Kagi is NOT a software publisher, and they do not provide technical support for Default Folder or any of the other programs they handle. For technical support, contact the authors of the individual programs.
Upgrading from Older Versions of Default Folder
If you have already registered a previous version of Default Folder, you do NOT need to reregister or pay an upgrade fee. Your old registration code will still work with the new version, and you should not even need to reenter the code.

The ﾒRegister SCSﾓ Application
Your copy of Default Folder should come with a small application called ﾒRegister SCSﾓ, which you use to create a customized registration form to send to Kagi. If you do not have the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application, you should download a fresh copy of the whole Default Folder package. The ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application is also available on its own from the St. Clair Software web site at <http://www.stclairsw.com/>. It is vital that you use the registration form since payments sent without the appropriate form can be delayed or lost.
When you launch the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application, it puts up a window asking for all the necessary information. Type your name, postal address, and e-mail address in the corresponding boxes at the top of the window. So that we can contact you, you must provide either a postal or e-mail address (please note that we do not reply by FAX). If you do not have an e-mail address, you must check the ﾒPostcard Receiptﾓ box (which automatically adds $1 to your charge) at the bottom right of the window. Then, fill in the payment details at the bottom left of the window. Choose your method of payment from the popup and complete the relevant information (credit card number, type of currency, etc.) below.
Next, indicate the programs you want to register in the middle of the window. Type the number of copies you want to register into the ﾒSingle Userﾓ box. In most cases you should just type ﾒ1ﾓ. Do not type the shareware fee into this box since the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application computes the fee for you. The ﾒSiteﾓ and ﾒWorld-Wideﾓ check boxes are intended for companies or organizations that want a license to use the shareware on all their machines. If you feel that the shareware program is worth more than the registration fee, you can add an optional bonus in the ﾒBonus US$ﾓ box. Please note that the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application lists more than three programs, and you can use the scroll bar at the right of the window to see the others.
Once you have filled in all this required information, the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application displays the total amount at the bottom right of the window. You then need to create a registration form by clicking one of the following three buttons:
･ Print... prints a hard copy of the registration form, which you can then mail to Kagi Shareware.
･ Copy... puts a copy of the registration form on your clipboard for you to paste into an e-mail message to send to Kagi Shareware. This method works only with credit cards since it is not possible to e-mail cash or checks.
･ Save... saves a copy of the registration to your hard disk as a SimpleText document for you to print out or e-mail later.
The Kagi Shareware e-mail and postal addresses are given on the registration form.
The Shareware Reminder
After you register, Kagi will automatically send you an email message titled "Thanks for your payment", acknowledging your purchase. Shortly afterward, St. Clair Software will send you an e-mail reply titled ﾒDefault Folder Registrationﾓ. This message contains the key to disable the shareware reminder that starts popping up after you have had Default Folder installed for 30 days. You should save this message as your receipt and also in case you reinstall Default Folder on a new machine and need the key to disable the shareware reminder again. If you checked the ﾒPostcard Receiptﾓ box in the Register SCS program, you will receive a postcard from Kagi confirming your purchase, and a letter and floppy disk from St. Clair Software containing your registration code and the latest version of Default Folder. Again, if you do not have an e-mail address, you must request a ﾒPostcard Receiptﾓ.
It can take Kagi Shareware up to a week to process a registration from the date they receive it (please make sure to factor in the delivery time if you use the postal system). If you do not receive the ﾒThanks for your paymentﾓ e-mail message, contact Kagi Shareware at <admin@kagi.com> or the postal address given on the registration form to ask about the status of your registration. If you receive it, but not the "Default Folder Registration" message, please contact St. Clair Software at <admin@stclairsw.com> to find out why. Keep in mind that some registrations can get lost in the mail on the way to Kagi. Also, sometimes the e-mail reply gets lost as well (America Online is particularly unreliable when it comes to receiving e-mail from the internet).
Once you have registered, you are considered registered for all future shareware versions of Default Folder, so you do not need to reregister or pay any additional fees when you upgrade to a new version. We maintain an e-mailing list to announce new versions, so by all means include an email address with your registration if you have one. You can also download the latest versions from the online services, internet archives, or the St. Clair Software web site at <http://www.stclairsw.com/>.
Common Mistakes
･ If you do not provide an e-mail address, you must give a postal address and check the ﾒPostcard Receiptﾓ box (this automatically adds $1 to the charge). If you do not, you will not receive any confirmation from Kagi.
･ You must send the registration form to Kagi Shareware and not to the shareware author. Kagi's e-mail and postal addresses are given on the registration form itself, under the words ﾒSend this form to:ﾓ.
･ Make sure you type your e-mail address correctly. If your e-mail address is wrong, you will not receive Kagi's confirmation message or the key to disable the shareware reminder.
･ Make sure you are registering the right program. Some people mistakenly register Sleeper, Screen Catcher, or another St. Clair Software product when they intend to register Default Folder. If you register the wrong program, you will not get the correct key to disable the shareware reminder, and the payment will not be processed correctly. The program you are registering is given on the ﾒProgram:ﾓ line of the resulting registration form, so you should double check that this line indicates the correct program.
･ Do not e-mail Kagi the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application or send a screen shot of the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ window. You use the ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application to create a registration form (which consists of some text and possibly bar codes if you are using the printed version), and you then send that form to Kagi.
･ Do not type the shareware fee into the ﾒSingle Userﾓ box. This box is for the number of copies you want to register, and in most cases you should just type ﾒ1ﾓ. The ﾒRegister SCSﾓ application automatically computes the total cost for you. Also, do not try to put an ﾒxﾓ in the ﾒSingle Userﾓ box; it only takes numbers.
･ Do not check the ﾒSiteﾓ or ﾒWorld-Wideﾓ boxes if you only want to register a single copy. These boxes are for companies or organizations that want a license to use the shareware on all their machines. If you mistakenly check one of these boxes, you will be charged significantly more than for a single copy.
･ Do not give a FAX number as the only means of contacting you. We do not reply by FAX, so we need either an e-mail or postal address. In particular, if you have a FAX number but no e-mail address, you still need to check the ﾒPostcard Receiptﾓ box.
